We gain respect when we respect other’s time

Posted: June 15, 2017 | Categories: Self-Improvement

Last month I had an appointment scheduled for some dental work.   I made the appointment two weeks out, and I did not plan well.  I realized that I had an earlier event, and it was likely that the time involved for that meeting would be more than I thought.  I would be at risk of being late for the appointment.

I called the dental office and said I would like to change the appointment.  I asked the office manager if they would have any problem filling the time.  She cordially and honestly replied:  “That is a 90-minute slot.  Those are typically the hardest to fill”.  When I heard that, I said, “Let’s keep the appointment.  I said I would be there.  I will be there.”

When the day came, I made a point of mentioning that I had a dental appointment scheduled, and I would have to leave right after the session.  It was fine.  No problem.

I got to the dental office just a few minutes ahead of time.  I was there when I said I would be there.  I have yet to cancel a scheduled appointment with them, and I have been a patient there for over ten years.  I wanted them to know that I am a person that can be counted on to do what I say I will do.

I wish I could say that I always do what I say I will do.  Sometimes I forget, and have to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot”.  I am still working on it.  I leave you with these two questions:  Have you ever known someone who always did exactly what they said they would do, when they said they would do it?  If you can think of such a person, what is the level of respect you have for them?
