Our reputation: The gold standard

Posted: June 6, 2013 | Categories: Self-Improvement

Think of iPhone or Disney…What is their greatest asset?  I think it is their reputation.  When we hear those names (brands) a whole unique set of thoughts (perception) comes to mind.  People buy an I-Phone because they want one.  Ask they how they like it, and you will hear them say, “I love it.”  They don’t wait until it goes on sale (it usually doesn’t).

When families plan their Disney Vacation, rarely is their discussion based on the cost of admission.  They want Disney.  While other companies struggle with coupons, rebates, and gimmicks, Disney and Apple just seem to glide along. (Yes, we know Samsung is nipping at their heels)

What do we need to do to build a perception like Disney or Apple?  A lot of things.  Let’s talk about what we can do to polish our reputation without any capital investment:

Do what we say we will do when we say we will do it.  You probably know a handful of people who always, I mean always, come through with their commitments.  In addition, their work is impeccable.  We never hear, “I got swamped” or “I was waiting for a report from someone”, or “I need some extra time”.  They just come through.  That is their reputation.  We count on these people and they don’t let us down.  They:

  1. Make commitment
  2. Do what they say they will do when they say they will do it
  3. Do it fast with no procrastination
  4. Do it right and with excellence

They usually have our highest respect.  Let’s try this on for size:  Do we find ourselves often falling short of deadlines?  Do others have to call us as a “reminder”?  Do we ever hear, “I hadn’t heard from you and was wondering…”Here is my challenge to all of us:

Make it a goal this week to receive a compliment from someone for your promptness and quality.  If you are already receiving such compliments right and left, be aware that you have built an excellent reputation, and you should be doing well in your business.  (If you aren’t, give me a call and we’ll find the gap).  DO IT.  DO IT FAST.  DO IT RIGHT.  If you do this, you will be building your legacy.
