I have a New Year’s Resolution!

Posted: December 28, 2015 | Categories: Self-Improvement

We’ve all heard that one.  The problem is that New Year’s resolutions only have a 10% of success.  As we approach the New Year, would you like to increase your resolution success percentage from 10% to 80%?   I will tell you how:  Learn and consistently practice the “Three D’s”.  The Three D’s are Desire, Discipline, and Determination.  First, let’s start with our new Year’s resolution.  Then we can have a specific target for applying these “Three D’s”.  To assist you in this, here are the three main areas that folks pick from to set their resolution:

  1. Relationships
  2. Health & fitness
  3. Financial & career

Let’s say you chose health and your goal was to lose 40 lbs. by the end of next year.  To achieve this you will need a specific plan of action.  It will probably involve a detailed schedule of exercise paired with carefully planned diet.  Once you have this plan, here is how you apply the “Three D’s”:

Desire:  Do you really want to lose 40 pounds?  Why?  How bad to you want to lose the weight?  If your answer is, “I think it would be a good thing to do”, you probably don’t have enough fire in the belly to make it happen.  You will likely fizzle.  Sorry to say that, but we I think we all know that is true.

On the other hand, your answer could be, “because I have a vision my myself….”.  As you go on to describe your vision, it is easy to tell that you earnestly want to achieve this goal and you are going to make it happen.

Discipline:  You will need to have a specific plan of action that will include steps, schedules, goals, benchmarks, and deadlines.  You will need to follow this plan consistently and avoid the urge to be distracted or procrastinate.

Determination:  Even when we are disciplined, there are always setbacks we need to deal with.  You could end up with the cold or flu, or some other barrier that interrupts your rhythm.  If you have determination, you will not let this happen.  You get “back on the horse”, and you must be even more determined.  Are you up for it?  If you can do this, you can be confident you will carry your resolution to success!

Desire + Discipline + Determination = Success!
