Give a gift that pays huge dividends

“An insincere grin?  No. That doesn’t fool anybody.  We know it is mechanical and we resent it.  I am talking about a real smile, a heartwarming smile, a smile that comes from within” – Dale Carnegie

A few days ago I attended a seminar hosted by a trade association.  For most events that I attend I know some people.  For this particular event I was a stranger in the crowd.  That changed quickly.  The first person I encountered in the room was Stan.  He smiled warmly, looked me in the eyes, and shook my hand gently but firmly.  While he was looking at me and shaking my hand, he paused for a 2-3 seconds.  That was powerful.  I was no longer a stranger in the crowd.  I had a friend.  This gave me the energy needed to go in to the evening with solid momentum.  The positive encounter is one I will long remember.

First impressions are made within seconds.  Many times, first impressions last forever.  Let’s go back to Stan:  When I met him he was busy setting up the tables.  I could see he was busy.  When he saw me, he subordinated his current task in favor of focusing on me.  Later that evening I would learn that Stan has written a leadership book that was scheduled to be released this week. Way to walk the talk…Stan!

Let’s face it:  Most of us could learn a lot from Stan.  We have so many things on our mind and we don’t have that 2 or 3 seconds that Stan took to greet people and sincerely make them feel important.

Here is a challenge for you:  Starting tomorrow, see how many smiles you can generate by smiling more at others.  Some folks will continue scowling, and some will surprise you.  Remember, if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.  It is a gift that will give great return.
