Understanding the Driver

Today I would like to talk about the first quadrant of the four personality types listed in the last blog – the “Driver” (choleric).  Before I begin, I want to emphasize that this is not one of those personality tests where someone tries to categorize us or put us in a box.  The purpose here is to improve our skills in communication and managing relationships.  In the roles we play each day, the understanding of ourselves and the basic personal style of others can create more quality conversations.

The Driver:  The Driver likes to be in control.  Examples this quadrant would be Donald Trump or General Patton.  They are results oriented, fast-paced, and think quickly.  They will do whatever it takes to succeed.  We know where we stand with them.  They are natural leaders and very willing to take responsibility.  They see the big picture, are highly creative, and tend to be good negotiators.  Drivers comprise approximately 18% of the population, and they often end up in top leadership roles.

If you are a driver:  You may need to be more patient and strengthen your listening skills   It may also be a stretch for you to include others, because you need to trust that they will do as good a job as you.  Strong emotional intelligence skills coupled with the “Drive” of a driver are a powerful leadership combination.

If you are talking to a driver:  Boil down what you say.  (Remember…they said, “leave a brief message).  Give them things in bullet point form.  Spare them the details.  They want results, and they want your recommendation and they expect the desired result.

At this point, some of you may be saying, “I am a blend of the four quadrants and I don’t show up 100% in any of the categories.”   That is common.  The key is to find out what your most dominant style is, understand it, and also understand the style exhibited by the person you are talking to.  You will take a step forward in opening up communication with others.
