The path from vision to reality
“Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is merely passing the time.”
– Joel Barker
Extensive studies have shown that less than 5% of people write out and achieve their goals in life. To turn a dream into reality requires a certain “Vision to reality” flow. This process has four main stages:
- Vision
- Goals
- Habits
- Activity
In my coaching, I find that most people are naturally good at one or two parts of this 4-step process. What do they do with the parts they aren’t good at? Get good at them. Just because it is not natural doesn’t mean you can become good at it. Here’s an example:
I have no problem with creating a vision. I have the ability to vividly create in my mind what I want. I see it clearly, and I want it. My challenge is to maintain discipline. I have so many ideas coming into my head that I have to watch it. My thoughts can become too diffuse, and I lose my focus.
My wife is totally different. She is highly focused and disciplined, and knows how to get in there and do the job right in the shortest amount of time. She is very strong in the area of habits and activities. Her challenge is vision. She struggles with creating a picture in her mind of what she wants. When she starts to dream, she has a tendency to block thoughts. As she puts it, “I don’t have time for a vision. I am too busy getting things done that need to be done”. I help her with her vision and she helps me stay on task and focused. When we put the two together, it works. In all fairness, we have been married 39 years, so we have had a lot of time to practice.
How about you? Are you where you want to be? Are you going the direction you want to go? Remember the advice of the late billionaire Bunker Hunt: To succeed, you need to do two things:
1. Know exactly what you want.
2. Be willing to pay the price to get there
