Get in to the action habit
“Ultimately
there is only one impediment to our growth and success, and that is laziness. If we overcome laziness, all other impediments are overcome” – M. Scott Peck
When I read the above quote this morning, I said to myself, that nails it! We have all probably heard the definition of insanity: “Doing things the same way we have always done them, and expecting different results”. And why do we do things the same way and expect improvement? Laziness! That’s right. We are in a certain routine and pattern, and we don’t want to be interrupted.
As I reflect on the coaching I have done in just this past week, here are some of the barriers folks have overcome:
- Holding people accountable (it is easier if you don’t)
- Lack of proper planning (Why not just “wing it”)
- Not confronting an important issue (It is easier for some to just go along)
- Allowing distractions when we should be focused on our work (What we are working on is probably harder that the distraction)
- Too much social talk (That is easier that working)
And just to top it off, let me give some of my favorite quotes from Albert Grays “Common Denominator of Success”
- “Successful people form the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do”
- “The things that failures don’t like to do are the very things that you and I don’t like to do”
- “Successful people are influenced by the desire for pleasing results. Failures are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods”
- “It is easier to adjust ourselves to the hardships of a poor living than it is to adjust ourselves to the hardships of making a better one”
If we were honest with ourselves, I’ll bet every one of us knows the most important habit we need to work on. You know how to tell? You have a recurring problem and you say to yourself, “Darn, that happened again!” What action or habit do you need to take to solve this problem? Would you? Could you? When?
